Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law making in vitro fertilization (IVF) more accessible for Californians by requiring large group health insurers to cover the procedure. Senate Bill 729 is a major step towards reproductive equity in the state, expanding IVF access and updating the definition of infertility to include same-sex couples. This law affects around 9 million Californians, excluding those with religious employers or on Medi-Cal. The law will go into effect in July 2025 for most and July 2027 for government workers.
